Anglo American Cataloguing Rules-2
Definition:AACR-2AACR Were international cataloging standards. First Published in 1967 and edited by
C..Sumner Spalding and the Second edition edited by Michael Gorman. The rules designed for
the Construction of library catalogs and bibliographical tools and cover the physical
description of library resources as well as provision of name and title access points.
Objectives:
The various types of entries constitutes the basic work of cataloging. There are different types
of entries and their relative functions are following:
• Describe a catalog entry;
• Explain the need for different kinds of entries;
• Distinguish their functional characteristics; and
• Identify the composition of entries in a dictionary and classified catalog.
Introduction:
A Library catalog is an outer and inner arm of catalogs. The term “Entry” is
explained With illustrations. It provides multiple entries for the document in a library
catalogue. The several entries provide, the basic entry known as “Main Entry”. And
also provides maximum data or information about a document and all other entries are
known as “Added Entries”. It also carries all the details of a book as in the Main Entry.
However, in a system known as the Unit Card System.
Meaning: Entry
An entry is a record of information for a specific purpose. This information is entered
into ‘kind of a record. It is depends upon the nature of the entry and its purpose.
In the Classified Catalogue, a Cross Reference Index Entry there are five types:
1. Alternative Name Entry
2. Variant-Form-of-Word Entry
3. Pseudonym-Real-Name Entry
4. Editor-of-Series Entry and
5. Generic-Name Entry
Entries in a Classified Catalogue:
In Ranganathan's Classified Catalogue there are following entries:
1. Main Entry
2. Cross Reference Entries
3. Class Index Entries
4. Book Index Entries
5. Cross Reference Index Entries
Reference Entries:
In a Library where a Dictionary Catalogue is maintained we see entries of the
type known as ‘References’ and also of the type known as ‘Analytical Entries’.
An essential feature in a library cataloging. Therefore, when there are several
variations in the spelling of a name of a person or corporate body or when a
term used as heading is having two or more synonymous terms there is a need to
accept one particular form of the name or heading throughout the catalog. It
helps users, we will provide a reference.
